Art and Design Exhibition Set in the Yucatán Jungle

Curated by Nadia Guitteau, founder of ALRATITOstudio, NEPANTLA is an immersive exhibition of photography, sculptural furniture and objects, textiles, ceramics, and paintings. Juxtaposed within the raw Yucatán jungle and the ruins of a partially restored henequen factory, NEPANTLA unfolds not within four walls but in a living landscape. 

A Nahuatl word for “the in-between”, nepantla is the experience of being at the intersection of cultures, languages, and identities, and finding creativity and power within these spaces. It embraces the generative friction of transition. The jungle itself becomes a passageway for NEPANTLA, with each work occupying a liminal zone between wilderness and civilization, past and present, body and spirit. 

NEPANTLA will feature work by both up-and-coming and established artists from Mexico, United States, and Cuba. Their contributions expand the dialogue between contemporary practice and ancestral presence, reflecting themes of transformation, material memory, and spatial storytelling. 

As part of NEPANTLA’s community programming, the exhibition is partnering with the Iniciativa de Artesanía Juvenil Maya (IAJM), a grassroots initiative based in Hocaba, Yucatán. IAJM empowers young Maya women to preserve and reimagine the ancestral art of weaving henequén on backstrap looms. They will be collaborating with designer Angela Damman and architect Luis Arturo García of EDAA, on an architectural intervention celebrating the region’s rich cultural heritage.

NEPANTLA is held in cooperation with Design Week Mexico.
